Using 2 Man trail tents instead of opting for one each when walking those long distance routes cuts the amount of weight on your back leading to less fatigue and the ability to cover ground faster.
Walking in pairs or groups offer advantages for safety, company and extra push when things get tough. Even though doubling up in a tent will offer a huge space saving in your pack and modern technology has granted us ultralight materials for the construction of those ever important tents you’ll still need something reliable and easy to set up.
Here we are going to look at 3 tents suitable for the backpacker, fishing trips or general camping.
Slumberjack 2 Person Trail Tent
Packed Weight : 6 pounds, 5 ounces
Packed Size : 6 x 20 inches
Floor area : 33.3 sq. ft.
Assembled dimensions : 84 x 52 x 41 inches
With a color coding system that helps you to get this tent up as quick as possible the Slumberjack is toward the lower price range of what you would expect to pay for a trial tent.
A large included fly sheet gives the tent an added layer of protection and if you can’t sting up a tarp does go some way to cutting down noise of any rain hammering on the tent roof.
Packing up to a manageable size for carrying with a floor space that will accommodate two people easily (unless your very tall) the components could be split between two or more backpackers to spread the weight around.
Kelty Grand Mesa 2
Packed Weight : 4 pounds, 10 ounces
Packed Size: 7 x 20 inches
Floor area: 29 sq. ft.
Assembled dimensions : 82 x 58/44 x 44
Being the lightest tent on this page the Kelty Grand Mesa is a more manageable tent over longer routes but this does come with an extra consideration. A good portion of the upper part of the tent is made out of mesh which although reduces the weight and adds to ventilation on hotter nights this does mean the fly sheet has to be used even if there is a hint of rain on the cards.
Using a color coding system for easy assembly of the high quality press fit poles this tent does have a smaller overall area than the other tents featured here which also helps to reduce the carrying weight.
ALPS Mountaineering Extreme 2
Packed Weight : 6 pounds, 8 ounces
Packed Size : 7 x 21 inches
Tent Area : 35 sq. ft.
Base Size : 5’2 x 7’8
Rated 3 Season
Height at Center : 3’6
For those that need a more sturdy tent for less than ideal weather conditions there are products like this 3 season tent from ALPS Mountaineering. A little more complex (and more costly) than the first two tents on this page, it also takes more time to get assembled but if you want something that’s going to still be there after a stormy night its just one of those eternal camping sacrifices.
A good height of over 40 inches at the center gives the taller person much more room to move around without having to crouch down too much. This is rated as a 3 season tent but this can depend on how warm you like it at night, always take plenty of precautions against the cold until your satisfied a tent is the right fit for you.
