I do bang on about it, but the L.E.D (light emitting diode) is the best thing to ever happen to us camping/hiking/outdoor folks. This almost indestructible component has such low power consumption compared to old style tungsten bulbs there’s just no need anymore to carry around heavy batteries (plus backups).
Add to that the operating time and overall cost of anything using a LED (and they’re in everything!) and your onto a winner. OK, there’s the top end LED’s that will push up the price of products like torches, but if your looking for a basic (to the point of being throwaway) product then your never going to be stuck for choice.
Even a few minutes on eBay spits out a massive amount of head torches and once you’ve weeded out the super super bad stuff that’ll never survive being taken out of the packaging (and these aren’t always the cheapest!) your still left with products that will only cost you the price of a few decent coffees in the UK (note to self….stop using the average price of a coffee as a comparison to everything and ultimately feeding a destructive Costa addiction!).
Dual Pack 3 Mode/12 Led Head Torch
Clarke International 19 LED Headlight
OK, some of the ‘value’ head torch products may not look as cool as something approaching £100, although the practicalities are just the same and if your expecting a messy few nights out its not going to break your heart if these lights get lost or damaged.

Wild camping in itself can be a little bit risky as you never know if the weathers going to turn on you and then there’s always the chance of that nasty human interaction that comes along every so often.
The human element can be eased by wild camping in remote areas, but urban camping adds that extra risk of a problem. I’m happy to drag all the expensive gear on the remote camp outs (with sufficient waterproofing) although when dealing with places close to towns/cities the cheaper side of my electronic collection gets a night out.
