Generating enough light for your campsite used to involve the need for very large heavy batteries to give even a modest run time from a camp light but now the use of ultra efficient LED’S has made the power requirements a lot less and allowed the production or a range of lightweight LED camping lights.
A dedicated camping lantern will give a better all round beam of light compared to even the biggest flashlight and it does save all that time trying to position a flashlight to get the light where you need it most.

Because we generally walk out to camping spots anything that comes in a lightweight package is always of interest but no matter where you camp the one thing you don’t want to do is be lugging heavy equipment around if there is an alternative.
With a fully working Coleman MicroPacker adding only 8 ounces to your camping gear its not something that’s going to making hiking difficult even if you choose to carry an extra set of AAA batteries.
Length of Operation
Even with low current LED systems the makers of this type of light still have to give us a good balance between size/weight and how long a lantern can produce a good amount of light. The 4.5V supplied by the 3 AAA batteries will output light for at least 12 hours (enough for a full nights use) and Coleman’s choice of using off the shelf batteries instead of a unique built in rechargeable make the lantern flexible enough for those long multi day camping trips as long as you pack spare batteries.
Fitting some higher capacity rechargeable NIMH (Nickle Metal Hydride) or even some Lithium will give a much longer run time than the batteries included with this camping light.
Direction Light Beam
The one advantage that camping lanterns have over flashlights is the ability to deliver a uniform horizontal light beam in all directions but the MicroPacker allows you to essential cut off the light coming from the back end and make this lantern directional. This feature will be ideal when using the camp light inside a tent to stop the beam shining directly into the eyes.
The separation between the LED’s and the outside of the vertical lens is enough to stop any heat transfer leaving the entire lantern cool, perfect for using inside a tent where any hot light source is a danger in so many ways.
The Coleman MicroPacker has many useful features and the lightweight will make it a favorite with hikers and backpackers, the way the camp light folds down into half its size when not in use means it wont take up a lot of space when packed away.
